+More Details
What is a Discovery Girl?

We consider all of our readers “Discovery Girls”—girls who are curious, strong, and enthusiastic about becoming the very best they can be. We also feature several girls in each issue of the magazine who are our Discovery Girls for that issue. Each summer, we hold a Discovery Girls Leadership Summits to work with the Discovery Girls who will be in our upcoming issues. During the 2-day summit, the girls develop their leadership skills, attend photo shoots, work with our editors to brainstorm ideas for the magazine, and have tons of fun!

Does that mean girls from every state can apply?

That’s right! No matter where you live, you can apply! Keep in mind, though, that we’ll only be holding one Summit in 2015. We won’t be selecting Discovery Girls again until 2016, so don’t miss out!

When and where will the Discovery Girls Summit be held?

The Summit will be held in the San Francisco Bay area. Details on the exact dates and location will be sent to the girls who are chosen to attend. The Summit will take place during the summer, most likely in August. If you are chosen, you will need to be available to come to California during this time period. (If you are chosen, we will let you know exact dates when you are notified).

Who can apply?

All girls who are between the ages of 8 and 12.

When is the deadline to apply?

We're accepting applications until April 14, 2015.

When will girls find out if they were chosen?

Girls will be notified by the end of May.

Interested? Start here.

IMPORTANT: Before you can submit an application, your parents must complete our consent process. Ask them to read the details in the "For Parents" section below.

While you're waiting for your parents to complete the consent process, read questionnaires and deadlines, and the photos you'll need below. You can start working on your questionnaire answers now! Good luck!

+Tips on Filling Out the Questionnaire

Tip #1: Think Hard About Your Answers, and Don’t Forget the Details! We really want to get to know you, so think carefully about your answers and remember to include details. For example, if your dream is to become a pediatrician, tell us why. You play five sports? What have you learned about yourself from playing each one? Are there days when you feel discouraged...or inspired? Don't be afraid to let your personality shine through in your answers—help us get to know the REAL you!

Tip #2: Remember: There Are No "Wrong" Answers. This isn't a test--we're looking for sincere, thoughtful answers. Even if you are not chosen for the summit, your answers will help us make Discovery Girls as relevant and helpful as it can be.

Tip #3: Write Your Answers in a Separate Word Doc. Write your answers out in a separate Word document (or any type of text file on your computer). When the application process opens, you’ll need to cut and paste them into the web form.

Tip #4: Photos Are a Must! Remember to submit three recent photos of yourself! Without photos, we can't consider you to be a Discovery Girl, no matter how well you've answered the questions! You can also send us photos of projects or crafts you've made—we'd love to see them. There's even a place on the questionnaire where you can share links to things like online videos or your blog or web site. Those things are all optional—but we MUST have three photos of you!

+The Questionnaire
