Independence Day is the most important secular holiday held in the United States. Americans take this day to celebrate all that is American, remembering the great sacrifices of our forefathers as they fought and won our independence from Great Britain.

I decided to apply to be a Discovery Girl because I wanted to help inspire other girls all around the world. In the different issues of DG, I was always fascinated by how these girls could come together to help create something so wonderful—and I really wanted to be a part of that! I also wanted to be chosen because I love to make new friends.

I decided to apply after having read the magazine for about a year. Every month I would go to my local library and select the newest issue to read at home. I would read about the Discovery Girls, but it never registered in my head that I could be one. One day when I had just gotten home from the library, I was leafing through the magazine and saw an ad about applying to be a Discovery Girl. I decided to apply right away!

I applied to be a Discovery Girl because I had been reading the magazine for a few years and really looked up to the girls in it. When I saw an ad for the Summit, it looked so fun and I had to enter! When I applied, I knew my odds of getting selected were extremely low, and that everybody else that had entered had also put a lot of hard work into their submission, so I tried not to worry about it too much.

I got my first issue of DG when I was six, and I have wanted to be one of the Discovery Girls ever since! I have always been kind of shy, so I'd never even thought of applying to become one, but one day I was looking through my DG magazines and realized that I was the oldest you could be to apply for DG, so I decided, "Why not try my luck?" I got online, and realized that the due date was in only a few days, so I quickly typed up the application and sent it in. I hoped for the best, but I wasn't confident that I would be one of the stronger applicants.
