January 19 was National Popcorn Day! But you can warm up any winter’s night with a bowl of hot popcorn. Tell your salt shaker to take a hike, and try one of these toppers instead.

Start with 6 to 8 cups of plain popcorn (either from the microwave or the stovetop). Pour the still-warm popcorn into a clean paper bag, and add one of the toppings below. Then seal the bag and shake it up.

Optional: Drizzle popcorn with 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil or melted butter before adding powdered seasonings. (Ask an adult to help you melt the butter.)

Ready to serve? Pour popcorn into a big bowl, and prepare to share.

• Cheese, Please

Add 3 tablespoons of powdered cheese topping.  (Yes, the powder that comes with a box of macaroni and cheese works!)

• Why Not Ranch?

Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of powder from a packet of ranch dressing mix.

• Cinnamon Toast

Mix ¼ cup of sugar with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.

• Tex-Mex

Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of taco seasoning with 2 tablespoons of powdered cheese topping.

• Movie Candy

Mix in a cup of M&Ms or Milk Duds. Yum!
